Chronic shoulder pain, declared functionally one-armed
A care-home worker, injured at work four years earlier.
The case
After the injury she lost her job and went through rehabilitation, shoulder surgery and six months at a specialised pain clinic, where the physiotherapists declined hands-on treatment because of her severe pain and discharged her as functionally one-armed. Four years on a cocktail of pain medication brought no relief, alongside a daily headache that woke her at night.
What changed
Although she had been written off as functionally one-armed, it took under thirty minutes for her to regain most of her shoulder movement. Her question afterwards: why had no one offered this in four years of suffering?
